Recurrent Pregnancy Loss and Acupuncture
Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) is generally defined as having two or more consecutive pregnancy losses. It is an incredibly difficult experience, but it is important to know that even after multiple losses, many women go on to have a successful pregnancy.
To understand why this happens and how acupuncture can help, we look at the physical and chemical environment of the body.
Common Underlying Causes
When doctors investigate RPL, they look for specific "roadblocks":
Genetic Factors: Sometimes the egg or sperm has a "coding error" in the DNA. This is the most common cause of early loss.
Uterine Issues: This includes the shape of the uterus or "silent" issues like polyps or fibroids that prevent the embryo from getting a good grip.
Blood Clotting: If the blood is "too thick" (clotting disorders), it can block the tiny blood vessels that feed the growing embryo.
Immune System: If the mother's immune system is too active, it might mistakenly attack the embryo as a "foreign object."
Hormone Levels: Low progesterone levels can mean the "nest" (the lining) isn't strong enough to hold the pregnancy.
How Acupuncture Helps Prevent Loss
Improving "Egg Energy": It takes 90 days for an egg to mature. Acupuncture boosts blood flow to the ovaries during this time, providing the nutrients needed for better DNA quality.
Thickening the "Nest": By widening the blood vessels, acupuncture ensures the uterine lining is thick and rich in oxygen. This provides a better "anchor" for the embryo.
Stopping "Micro-Cramps": A nervous or twitchy uterus can physically detach an embryo. Acupuncture acts as a muscle relaxant to keep the uterus quiet and still.
Balancing the Immune System: It tells the body to stay in "nurture mode" rather than "attack mode," which helps the immune system accept the pregnancy.
Reducing Stress Chemicals: High stress causes the body to produce cortisol, which can restrict blood flow to the baby
When to seek help:
BC Women’s Hospital still operates its Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) Clinic.
It remains a highly specialized, multidisciplinary program that provides medical investigation, treatment, and emotional support for patients in British Columbia.
Use acupuncture for 3 months before trying again to "reset" your hormone balance and egg quality.
Early Pregnancy Support: Many women continue acupuncture once a week through the first trimester (up to 12 weeks) to keep the uterus relaxed and the blood flow steady.
